Joie de Vivre

April 13 – May 18, 2013

Opening Reception: Saturday April 13, from 7 – 10pm
April, 2013- With spring comes a vivacious new exhibition at LuminArte Gallery, Joie de Vivre or "Joy of life," a showcase designedto accentuate the brighter essence of the human consciousness, and convey an enthusiastic enjoyment of life through creativity. Joie de Vivre is a celebration of spirit, a jubilee exalting life at its fullest; and in this exhibit, bright and energetic creations in the media of painting, sculpture and photography stimulate a sense of positive energy through the most light-hearted aspects of artistic expression. The exhibition will compliment “Two Brothers, Two Borders,” an exhibition of works by Cuban brothers Alejandro and Esteban Leyva, which has been extended due to popular demand, and will precede a solo exhibition of award winning artist Ron Burkhardt, which opens during the DADA Art Walk on April 20th.
Texas based artists, including Leanne Venier, Waleed Arshad, Kay Dalton, Melissa Ellis, Laura Anzak-Strike, Jessica Manheim, Jeff McClung, David Salomon,Claire Giroux,Gene Mittler and Steve Ko will be exhibiting artworks alongside nationally acclaimed artists like, Irene Neal, Bronwyn Towle, Robin Antar, Teri Starkweather, JoAnn Cox, Gilda Oliver and Donna Lee Steffens, as well as international artists such as Esther Wertheimer, Nicolantonio Mucciaccia, Francisco Ceron, Elisha Ben-Yitzhak, Jim Pescott and H.M. Saffer.

Pissing Into the Wind by Jeff McClung

Jeff McClung, a faculty member at the University of North Texas, utilizes natural elements in his sculpture to represent the structures that humans build in opposition to the forces that are trying to erode them back to their natural state. Our manipulation of nature to create these structures, which may sometimes out live us, leads us to try to capture a sort of temporary immortality through the things we create. Jeff casts these structures in bronze to give them more permanence, and usually includes one or more figures interacting with the structure, often in somewhat humorous, but reflective way. The structures that people interact with every day shape the way we think almost as much as the language we speak; but those structures are always in a state of change, and will eventually break down and return to the earth in the same way that we do.

Olive Trees by H.M. Saffer

H.M. Saffer studied at the acclaimed L’Ecole Des Beaux Arts is Paris, France, where he began a prolific career in music, performing with several notable French stars. He later expanded his influence in the music industry through song writing and record production, working with musical pioneers such as Ray Charles and the Four Seasons, as well as in producing music for films, Broadway productions and in the commercial industry. Alongside his music career, HM also developed his art, exhibiting in France and Belgium, and became owner and chef of two restaurants in Paris and a third in Ibiza, Spain. He later traveled to Asia, studying with Japanese master painters while applying Western techniques to develop a unique style of artwork that was well received by galleries in both Japan and Hong Kong. HM returned to the US in the 1990’s, taking up residency in upstate New York, instructing art and exhibiting his paintings internationally.

RON BURKHARDT
 "EarthScapes and Memory Links"
April 20– May 18, 2013

An opening reception with the artist will be held on April 20, 2013 from 7 - 10PM at LuminArte Gallery, located at 1727 E. Levee St. in the Dallas Design District. The gallery will open its doors at noon for the DADA Art Walk.

On April 20, during the DADA Art Walk, LuminArte will welcome renowned artist Ron Burkhardt for a solo exhibit of both of his award winning, original genres: Notismand Earth Art. Ron’s raw, anti-tech work preserves the primal spirituality of our shared histories as it chronicles a society whose multi-tasking demands intrude on every facet of lifeBurkhardt has been involved in over fifty exhibitions in the past decade and has won over 200 creative awards in his career, including a Medici medal from the Biennale Internazionale Dell’Arte Contemporanea in Florence, Italy, Art in America’s “PaperWorks” in Huntington, NY, and the American Art Awards in Los Angeles

Split Vision/Color Detachment by Ron Burkhardt

Born in the serene, small-town landscape of the American Midwest, and bred in the urban cauldron of New York City, Ron Burkhardt’s art career has been marked by unconventional breakthroughs. As a major creative force running his own New York City ad agency in the 90’s, Burkhardt gained honors and fame. But when 9/11 hit, it altered his world-view forever. Suddenly the witty ads and Super Bowl commercials he was known for seemed frivolous; and he decided to become more engage in his art pursuits.

Featured in Who's Who in American Art, Ron has been interviewed on NBC, CBS, CNN, Aspen-PBS, and WVVH and Plum TV in the Hamptons. His paintings are held in numerous museums, corporate and university collections in the US, South America and Europe, have been acquired by scores of distinguished collectors, and sold at Sotheby’s and Phillips de Pury auctions in New York.

Black Optics by Ron Burkhardt        Blue Zen by Ron Burkhardt

Notism fuses frantic scrawls with organic gesture; a free-spirited conglomeration of obsessive design, linear rhythms and high-voltage colors moving in all directions. Capturing the innate power of hieroglyphics, his work is a counterpoint to our multi-tasking society. Multi-faceted, richly complex surfaces are grounded by textural substrates that bring layers of nostalgia to life. Ron's relentless notes explode with energy on canvas, honoring the beauty found amid chaos. Abstract symbols collide in raw layers of paint and passion, startling in their power to transform language into emotion.

La Vita by Ron Burkhardt

Ron Burkhardt’s latest artistic breakthrough takes us back to our organic foundations.
Rooted in nature's gritty reality, Earth Art reveals intriguing depths and layers of color substrates forged from earth's crust. Heralding the complexity and organic power of our planet, these canvases fuse paint, rain and pond water, indigenous soil, snow and intense sun over a period of weeks to create otherworldly shapes, dimensions and color forms. When this natural process concludes, elements of grass, sky, lakes, mountains and deserts emerge from the painted surface, with raw earth fused into canvas, forming a permanent record of earth's majestic riches. Each is signed on the back, where he also identifies the date and region where the art was created.

Fantastic Realism

May 25 – June 29, 2013

Opening Reception: Saturday May 25, from 7 – 10pm

Fantastic Realism, a captivating new exhibit showcasing provocative and imaginative artworks in a variety of media, opens at LuminArté Gallery on May 25, 2013. The international exhibition will run through June 29th, with an artist reception on May 25th. Both the exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

“A Moment Before Glass Hit the Floor” by Sergei Rodionov

Russian born photographer, Sergei Rodionov, is based in Dallas and utilizes his classical art training to convey colorful narratives to an international audience. His work is widely published and included in important collections and museums, such as Museum of Victoria and Albert.

“Untitled” by Magi Calhoun                          “Down Color” by Santiago Ribeiro

Romanian born sculptor, Magi Calhoun lives and works in Dallas, giving life to clay in narrations depicting the inner world of emotions and dreams.
In Portuguese artist,  Santiago Ribeiro’s paintings, complex compositions illustrate deep concerns about modern society and its individual and collective behavior  Santiago’s work is in numerous private collections as well as in the Collection of Contemporary Art of the National Museum Machado de Castro and in the Bissaya Barreto Foundation in Coimbra, Portugal.
Sometime playful, often times haunting, the phenomenal, dreamlike artworks highlighted in this exhibition depict the evolution of a deeply intellectual and imaginative artist movement as expressed by both local and international artists, including Katrin Alvarez, Shahla Rosa, Magi Calhoun, Chema Gil, Alan Shepard, Sue Little, Mark Vey, Sergei Rodionov, Liba W. Stambollion, Patrick Soulieres, Kathy Seaboyer, Trent Mann, Salvatore Zagami, Igor Samsonov, Otto Rapp, Santiago Ribeiro and Tina Spiro.

“Liberated Mantis” by Liba W. Stambollion

Liba W. Stambollion grew up in South East Asia before moving to the USA, where she studied painting, wood working and bookbinding at the Art Institute of Chicago. Liba has been living in Paris since 1993 where she paints, writes, makes books and designs furniture.
Like Surrealism, Fantastic Realism delves into the inner universe of the human mind; but, as a genre with its origins in post World War II Vienna, this lasting art movement focuses less on the political and psychological concerns of Surrealism, and finds its direction through the depictions of the dualistic nature of reality in a dynamic expression of the human condition. While being stylistically influenced by both Gothic and Renaissance artwork, including Northern European masters like Hieronymus Bosch, prevailing themes like conscious and subconscious states, civilization and nature, and war and peace become unified concepts rather than opposing forces. Fantastic Realism also deviates from Surrealism in its search for subjective Truth rather than focusing on the seemingly absurd juxtapositions of free associations. The Fantastic Realists are more concerned with creating a modern mythology by exploring a dream-conscious state in order to increase a depth of perception and awareness and to develop a poetic world view.

“Icon” by Katrin Alvarez                 “Self Portrait with the Critical Eye” by Otto Rapp

Based in Cologne, Germany, Katrin Alvarez has won numerous international awards and is included in prestigious collection such as the New Fantastic Art Museum in Vienna. Her paintings and poetry depict the overwhelming beauty of existence as well as its cruel dark sides.
Based in Vienna, Austria, Otto Rapp is greatly influence by the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism, exploring the realms of his “Inner Universe” through meticulously detailed paintings and illustrations that depict a singular awareness and unity within conscious and subconscious states.

The Puzzle Aesthetic

The Puzzle Aesthetic Book Signing by Jim Lively and Puzzle Aesthetic Exhibition

Saturday, May 25, 7pm – 10pm.

Are you or someone you love among the millions of Americans trying to put their lives back together while your former corporate employer got rich and its executives, armed with golden parachutes, decided to “downsize,” “rightsize” – capsize?  Jim Lively’s The Puzzle Aesthetic will both anger and engage you, and ultimately lead you through the art therapy that helped the author heal and discover his true passion. The Puzzle Aesthetic is a fictional work based on the history of a very real Dallasite, Jim Lively,

The Puzzle Aesthetic Exhibit features multi-media art influenced by the novel, which is created through photography, video and painted works by Jim Lively, Jamie Labar and Kay Dalton and focuses squarely on the average person existing within the happenstance tide that is corporate America. A highlight of the exhibition is a video installation called “Exit Interview” where Lively incorporates almost verbatim, the absurd questions that were posed to him in his own exit interview. Model and actress, Arden Debelle is acting the part of Jim Keeton, the protagonist in Lively’s book. Lively filmed and edited numerous takes of the entire interview process as Arden’s responses deteriorated from legitimate response to the type of sarcastic responses more deserving in light of the absurd questions being posed.

The event coincides with the “Fantastic Realism” exhibit, which will run through June 29, 2013

Waleed Arshad
The Vortex Between Light and Dark

February 16th – March 2nd, 2013

The vortex between light and dark pulls us into a black hole of distraction, a state of delusion brought on by the narcotizing effects of modern consumer culture. An individual becomes lost, intoxicated by triviality, and gives up control in a spiritual void.  This is a state of exile from our true selves, our creative selves. Waleed  Arshad, in a collaborative exchange with Phirip Divine and BroucLeon, creates a presentation of art and music in the service of salvation through artistic expression.

Vortex by Waleed Arshad

Iraqi-born artist, Waleed Arshad often explores themes of instability in his artwork, navigating the space between home and exile by depicting symbols of displacement.
After being targeted for his work, Arshad now lives in exile in the United States. Waleed reflects, "I have to feel myself as a human being, and I can't be a real human being if I have to declare whether I am Shiite or Sunni."

Exile is no easier. Asylum policies, plagued by ambivalent bureaucratic pitfalls, promote a limbo of disorientation, disqualification & dis- integration and corrode one’s sense of Self. In this state of uncertainty, loss of identity and control become an existential dilemma.

“For me, the ultimate task for the artist is to give his artwork its own existence, independent of the artist himself.” In Waleed’s new body of work, he has progressed beyond the status of “artist in exile” to further seek answers to the fundamental question of ''why do we exist?''
“For me, we exist to create.”

Vistas by Waleed Arshad

Phirip Divine is an up and coming emcee from Dallas, striving to bring the underground to the limelight and put substance back into music. BroucLeon is a Dallas rapper, challenging the general perception of Rap and Hip Hop. He describes his vision as an experimental conscious abundance of poetry, straddling the line between light and dark, and bound by no bounds. Poetry is one of his many loves in a life dedicated to music.

 "Red"
Existentialism in Art
January 19- February 9, 2013

LuminArte Gallery in the Dallas Design District starts off the New Year with a stimulating new exhibition, "Red - Existentialism in Art," which examines our place in the universe and delves into the questions of subjectivity, spirituality and the nature of existence. Existentialism transcends systematic philosophies and affirms introspective “authenticity,” while the color red suggests a primal identity, passionate and profound. Each artist demonstrates this depth of experience and contemplation through very personal explorations of creativity, producing distinctly powerful and moving works of art.
Scheduled from January 19 – February 9, 2013, “Red” features a roster of international artists from around the US, India, Sweden, Russia, Mexico, Israel, England and Sierra Leone as well as a few local favorites, displaying artworks in the media of painting, sculpture, photography and video art. The reception for "Red" will be held on January 19 from 7-10PM at LuminArte Gallery, showcasing the artwork of Wewer Keohane, Puneeta Mittal, Alison Jardine, Kay Dalton, Elizabeth Anyaa, Araceli Salcedo, Jim Lively, Ted Barr, Richard Bailey, Eitan Vitkon, Luba Muravyeva, John Milton, David Hodge and Hi-Jin Kang Hodge.

“Mask” by Luba Muravyeva

Award winning artist, Luba Muravyeva, is an accomplished painter and sculptor, with more than a dozen large-scale commissioned sculptures in public spaces throughout the USA, Russia, Ukraine and Moldova. Luba’s artwork vividly portrays a depth of feeling and an exploration of the spiritual evolution of mankind through the expression of empathy and compassion.
“In my perception, the Universe is a constantly flowing energy, the energy radiating from one world and forming new worlds. The Nature of a Human is the same as the Nature of the Universe.”

“Back to Earth” by John Milton

The artworks of Dallas based photographer John Milton, embody the human form as a simple, yet sublime reflection of each of us. Utilizing a 160-year-old Palladium printing process, each photograph is created by hand by coating fine art papers with a light sensitive compound containing Palladium and exposing negatives to Ultraviolet light. The final prints embody the never-ending beauty that is human and the permanence of precious metals.
“The human figure has inspired, vexed, perplexed, and confused the world since time immemorial. The nude has been the focus of masters and imitators, artists and pretenders all the while remaining unchanged in its basic and beautiful form. The human figure is simply the essence of each of us.”

“Judy” from “Dreamland” by David Hodge and Hi-Jin Kang Hodge

David Hodge and Hi-Jin Kang Hodge have created video installations for artistic exhibitions around the world. Their pieces typically blend editorial materials and innovative uses of technology to explore complex human and social questions. Above all, they create cohesive work that identifies foundational principles and expands on them through multiple viewpoints. “Dreamland,” a video installation previously presented at the Centre Pompidou Museum in Paris, France explores the abstract narration of dream sequences portrayed by multiple storytellers, creating a continuum of free-form associations.
“In our work, we pose questions that probe individual hopes and resolutions. We hear the conversation of humanity striving for the comfort of permanence, all while recognizing that everything constantly changes around us.”

“Internal Space” by Puneeta Mittal

Puneeta Mittal was born and educated in India, having earned a Master’s degree in Hindi Literature before moving to New York, where she received her MFA with a focus on ceramics. Puneeta works in ceramics, sculpture and painting, creating an enchanting array of original pieces. The intimate influences of her rich heritage and culture can be seen in her work today. She has a strong belief that everything that is born, grows and withers away to be yet born again; and as incessant change proceeds in an evolutionary cycle, clay becomes an ideal medium for her expressive goals.
“I chose not to be limited to a small corner space that defines who I am and what I must make.” To quote Dalai Lama, “Within the seed of the cause of events is the seed for their cessation and disintegration.”

“Dual Nature”

MFA Exhibition by Magi Calhoun

December 8- 30, 2012

Reception on Saturday, December 22th from 7-10PM

The primary focus of LuminArte Gallery is in being a vital element in the thriving Dallas creative community, not only by featuring emerging local artists and performers, but also by nurturing a singular identification with social contribution and with the promotion of art education. In this spirit of recognition of academic achievement, LuminArte proudly unveils the complex and unique ceramic work of Magi Calhoun, in her much anticipated Master of Fine Arts showcase.

Tea Time Puzzle 4

Magi Calhoun has won numerous awards including the 2012 National Sculpture Society Scholarship Award and the Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts Residency in Newcastle, Maine. Her sculpture has been exhibited internationally in such countries as England. Portugal and Mexico; and her work has been shown throughout the USA including Texas, California, Montana, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Florida. Magi will be receiving her MFA in Ceramics from the University of North Texas, where she studied under the inspirational and patient direction of Jerry Austin,  Professor-Studio Arts, College of Visual Arts, along with the kind and professional support of Dr. Robert Milnes, Dean of the College of Visual Arts.
The esoteric truths found in such ancient writings as the Kabbalah deeply resonate in Magi’s artwork, promoting an exploration of a metaphysical reality though the depiction of subconscious motifs. The duality derived from her creative process becomes a reflection of a greater unseen reality, filtered through a waking aesthetic of surreal, dream-like imagery.

“I feel that abandoning the need for logical explanations can enable us to gain an image of the world that goes beyond the senses and opens the door to a more spiritual level of consciousness. You cannot perceive the essence of truth through your senses; a spiritual reality is the origin of everything physical. I want the clay to transcend its physicality and challenge the viewer to consider some of these intangible metaphysical truths, to consider the duality of nature and spirit (ego).”

"Mirror, Mirror on the Wall" by Nicole Kallenberg

Nicole Kallenberg (Austin)
Nicole's works  are targeted to  provoke emotions from the viewer.  Her technique and style serve her well in this ambition.  Inspired by Caravaggio and Impressionists such as Monet and Renoir, she makes use of oil, wax and her brush to convey a dramatic application of the materials, further enhancing the energy of her works. Nicole implements tenebrism, a technique created by Caravaggio, which is a dramatic shift from dark to light, to create a dark emotional backdrop with the spotlight on her  characters.

"Self Analysis" by Patrick Soulieres

Patrick Soulieres (Quebec)
Patrick's composes his paintings with symbols.  Each one is intended to represent through a simple image, a phenomenon or a state of things invisible by nature: knowledge transmission, concept formation, time consciousness and emotional vulnerability.  Each painting presents one or many characters in action or simply posing.  These characters are shown naked so that each scene sets on a temporal background and has the highest symbolic charge.  The use of methods like corporal distortion and anatomical substitution links Patrick's art to Surrealism.  Nonetheless, Patrick's  association of symbolic elements is everything but free and, moreover, the phenomena or state of things pictured have more to do with the conscious than the unconscious.
